The Renaultsport Clio rival gets a big mesh grille like the Focus ST's, a dramatic bodykit with side skirts and a roof-mounted wing and rear diffuser, 17-inch alloy wheels and twin exhaust pipes.

Power comes from a 178bhp 1.6 EcoBoost turbo petrol engine. It also packs 240Nm of torque, and Ford claims a 0-60mph of less than seven seconds, plus a top speed of 136mph.

However, the ST will be able to return 40mpg while emitting around 140g/km of CO2, so it should be reasonably cheap to run.

The chassis has been honed by Ford's Team RS at the Nurburgring circuit in Germany, where engineers have covered more than 3,500 test miles. As standard, the Fiesta ST gets Torque Vectoring, 15mm lower suspension and a three-stage ESP system.

Inside the Fiesta ST gets Recaro sports seats, plus a sports steering wheel, gearlever and ST badging. It also boasts MyKey – which allows owners to limit performance when less-experienced drivers are at the wheel – and SYNC, a voice-activated connectivity system, which features Bluetooth music streaming.

Expect a price tag of around £17,500 when sales start in early 2013. A five-door version will be available for North America, although the UK will only get the three-door car shown here.

The wait is nearly over for fast Ford fans. The all-new Focus ST has taken a big step closer to showrooms, and Auto Express was invited along to be part of the process. We joined Ford’s engineers in the Eifel Mountains, Germany, as part of the team which prepared to sign off the 247bhp hot hatch for production.


Don’t be fooled by the plastic wheel trims fitted to the car in our pictures. With temperatures dipping as low as -9 degrees Celsius, Ford’s team wisely decided to fit a set of winter tyres to our test car. Not that the ST is ever likely to be mistaken for a basic model...

Paul Wijgaerts is technical specialist for performance cars at Ford of Europe, and has the job of looking after us for the day. He explains that the visual changes are more than simple cosmetic tweaks, as they’re also designed to improve high-speed stability.

He then runs through the list of mechanical changes. It includes a tuned version of the Mondeo’s 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine, plus revised suspension geometry, new springs and dampers, a variable-ratio steering set-up and upgraded transmission.

It's the cleanest Focus ever! When it goes on sale next year the Ford Focus ECOnetic will join a host of ultra-low emitting family hatchbacks – including the 85g/km Kia Rio – boasting over 80mpg and CO2 emissions under 95g/km.
Efficiency is key in this new Focus variant, the 1.6 litre Duratorq engine has been significantly revised for maximum efficiency. It achieves a 13mpg improvement over the current 1.6 TDCi and has improved CO2 emissions by 14g/km.

The 105bhp unit has a new injection system, a completely redesigned turbocharger combined with enhanced charge cooling and uses friction reducing engine components. The 6-speed manual Durashift gearbox has been optimised to eliminate frictional losses by utilising special low friction transmission oil and has a higher gearing to reduce engine speed when cruising in top gear.

The bodywork has also been tweaked to improved the overall aerodynamics of the car, Ford has fitted additional undershields and deflectors to smoothen the airflow under the car as well as low drag hub caps which are more streamlined than conventional alloy wheels. The Focus ECOnetic comes with Ford’s clever Active Grille Shutter system which closes the air intakes when less airflow is required giving a 2% reduction in CO2 emissions.

The full range of Ford ECOnetic Technologies shared with other models in the all-new Focus line-up are incorporated as standard including Ford Auto-Start-Stop, Smart Regenerative Charging, Ford Eco Mode and Shift Indicator Light. It also comes with a set of ultra-low roll resistance tyres.

The newcomer will debut next week at the Amsterdam Motor Show and will be available in UK showrooms in spring 2012 as a five door hatchback and estate.

It’s the hottest Focus ST ever! Ford will wow crowds at next month’s Paris Motor Show with this new, VW Golf GTI-rivalling high-performance hatch.

Packing striking looks and a mighty 247bhp turbocharged engine, the ST will sit at the very top of the all-new Focus range, which also debuts in France.


It’s the first model developed by Ford’s global Performance Vehicles team, and features a version of the all-new direct-injection 2.0-litre EcoBoost engine. This replaces the old 2.5-litre five-cylinder unit, and not only offers greater power, but is also far more efficient.

Ford is remaining tight-lipped over performance figures for now. Yet as the car delivers the same output as Renaultsport’s Mégane 250, and has 40bhp more than the Golf GTI and 25bhp more than the outgoing ST, it’s set to cover 0-60mph in less than six seconds and go on to 155mph.



Sports suspension with a clever traction control system featuring torque vectoring will ensure all that punch reaches the road. But with a six-speed manual box, it should return 35mpg combined economy and emit 180g/km of CO2.

The ST’s pace is backed up by its looks. The front end is dominated by a huge mesh grille, while the muscular bodykit incorporates low sills, a roof spoiler and low rear bumper, allowing twin exhausts to exit through its centre. This show car is finished in Tangerine Scream – a bright orange colour which is likely to be an option.



The new ST won’t be available as a three-door (sales of the previous version were slow), but an estate could join the five-door for the first time. Both get a racy cabin, with coloured sports seats, a row of gauges on the facia and carbon fibre and piano black trim.

While the new Focus range goes on sale later this year, the ST won’t appear until late 2011. Expect a £24,000 price tag. Also at Paris, Ford will reveal its plug-in hybrid technology for the new C-MAX compact MPV.
